WordPress Daily Prompt: 12 March 2023

Where would you go on a shopping spree?

OK, let’s suppose that I have a large amount of money to spend as I please at the shops. What am I going to buy and where am I going to buy it?

I used to love to window shop and fantasise about what I would buy if I had that elusive winning lottery ticket. It’s actually much harder to decide now because although there are things I would like to have nobody seems to be making them anymore.

At one time I would have said that I would spend my windfall at John Martin’s department store in Adelaide where I could have bought clothes, homewares, gifts and dolls for my collection. Most homewares these days seem to be grey, it’s hard to find clothes I really like at the shops and many modern dolls are unappealing to me. Sadly “Johnnies” has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Can I please have my shopping spree at John Martins in about 1980? Oh and I’d like to go to Toys’R’Us when the Barbie section took up two aisles and was full of dolls and outfits for them.

I do like to go to markets and it would be great to go to a market and be able to buy whatever took my fancy but I’d also need a larger house to put things in. I would love to go to a doll show where I could buy all the vintage dolls I liked. Usually I have to look at everything and then decide on one or two things I can afford to buy.

Probably the place where I would really have my shopping spree though is eBay. There I have the best chances of finding the things I love and I don’t have to worry about how I’m going to carry them home.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband, David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on WordPress.com with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. Currently we have five pets between us. Naomi's two dogs Toby and Teddy and cats, Tigerwoods and Panther and my cat Polly. My dog Cindy passed away aged 16 in April 2022.
