If you could, would you like to hibernate during the winter months?

I like the climate in Tasmania, it’s actually one of the reasons we moved here, to get away from the increasingly hot summers in the mainland states. Of course it does get hot here and it can be humid which means that 25 degrees Celsius here feels hotter to me than 25 degrees used to in Adelaide, or possibly I have become fully acclimatised to the weather here.

Winter in Tasmania is colder than the mainland states but not as cold as people think. We do have snow but mostly in mountainous areas. It’s rare to get snow below 400 metres. Geeveston was cold in winter, some days the temperature didn’t get into double figures all day, fog could hang around till lunchtime and it rained a lot. I had friends around the Huon Valley that regularly got snow but I only had snow in my garden twice in all the time I lived there. Usually the snow didn’t last long and would all be melted away in a day or so. Oatlands, where Naomi used to live is a very cold town. It snows a bit more often there although again it doesn’t settle for long but icy streets, frozen pipes and all day fog are not out of the ordinary in winter.

Now we live on the coast and the climate is noticeably different. It doesn’t get as cold in winter. We do get the fog but ice on the roads is less common, usually only in the early mornings. Summers feel warmer and generally the temperatures in northern Tasmania do seem to be a couple of degrees warmer than in the south.

So, would I like to hibernate in winter? I did in the winter of 2020, I think we called it Lockdown. I only left the house to get the mail and walk Cindy. But it wasn’t that cold. I don’t really feel the need to hibernate here even though the rain and wind can get you down when you don’t get a break from it. It’s not unbearable. I would much rather hibernate in summer as I don’t really like excessive heat.
