Truthful Tuesday: 22 November

Truthful Tuesday is a prompt started by PCGuyIV and currently hosted by Di of Pensitivity101. Her question today is about the assassination of John F Kennedy.

Can you remember what you were doing or where you were when this happened, or if you were born after 1963, can you remember your whereabouts for other major historical events that have occurred since?

I was only six years old when JFK was shot. We were living in England then and it would have been on the television news. At that age I was just beginning to take an interest in the wider world but I can’t honestly say if I remember seeing this news story or not. I do remember news stories from that period, there was a lot going on in the early to mid sixties. What I can’t be sure of is what are my memories and what I know from later reading and seeing things on television about it.

I do remember that the Pope died, Pope John XXIII in June 1963. I remember it because of the coverage of how a new Pope would be chosen. I was quite intrigued even though we’re not Catholic or even particularly religious. I think that it was the smoke signal that captured my interest.

I remember the hype about the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 just a year later and the US election held around the same time. That was Lyndon Johnson vs Barry Goldwater. I never learned anything about what the issues were but I do recall mum saying something along the lines of “If Goldwater wins there will be a World War.” Thanks mum, just what every seven year old needs to hear. Mum was not really interested in politics but that comment may have been what made me take an interest as I got older.

So it is kind of odd that I can’t recall anything specific about the JFK assassination because I was certainly old enough to have been paying attention.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband, David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on WordPress.com with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. Currently we have five pets between us. Naomi's two dogs Toby and Teddy and cats, Tigerwoods and Panther and my cat Polly. My dog Cindy passed away aged 16 in April 2022.
