Fandango is enjoying a family vacation this week but he thoughtfully left us his weekly FPQ. It’s a rerun but I didn’t do it the first time anyway.
“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that, in the modern world, the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubts.”
Bertrand Russell
Do you concur with Mr. Russell’s perspective? Why or why not?
Sadly, I do. It does seem as if the stupid people in the world are hell bent on ruining it for everyone else. Why are they so cocksure? I suppose it is their ignorance that makes them so. They don’t have the intelligence or the tolerance to try and see things from any perspective but their own.

Intelligent people know that they don’t know everything and maybe they second guess themselves too much or perhaps they just don’t want to impose their views on everyone. I don’t really know.
These days I think more and more of how when I was an idealistic teenager of fifteen or so I used to get very upset with my stepfather. He would often say “People are stupid.” and he had a pessimistic view of the world. I didn’t want to believe it could be that bad. Now I often find myself thinking the same thing and wondering if there are enough of the not stupid people to save us.
You’re “ wondering if there are enough of the not stupid people to save us.” I think the answer is no

I think the “not stupid” greatly outnumber the “stupid” — if they are indeed as stupid as they act and I have some doubts about how much of it is real and how much of it is play-acting. But the problem is, the “non-stupid” have nothing in common except not being stupid — and that’s not enough. The driven people are mostly Republicans. Democrats are all over the place. They are for all the things we are for, but there’s an un-focused-ness about them. They don’t have the singularity of purpose that drives the GOP to try to take over the world. There are ALWAYS many many many MANY more people who don’t want to take over the world or even a tiny part of it — but they aren’t the ones driving the ship of state.
