Challenge Your Camera #8: Sport

Not Just Cricket

I would not call myself a sporty person but there are three sports I’ve followed closely in the past few decades. I can’t go to these events now because I live too far away but archives to the rescue.

I didn’t get interested in cricket until the early 2000s. I started watching it on TV with my husband who attempted to explain the rules to me. After a year or two I decided that I’d like to see a live match and tentatively ventured to Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to get to the odd Test Match. We don’t get many of those in Hobart. I’ve been to ODI’s and T20 matches. Naturally I follow the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash.

I enjoyed the photo opportunities as much as the sport and especially liked to try to photograph the players. Not selfies or posed shots but actually playing, practicing or some kind of candid shot. Here are a few of them.

Before there was cricket there were motorsports. From 1985 to 1997 I think it was we had a Formula One Grand Prix in Adelaide, South Australia where I lived at that time. David and I went every year and again I loved the photo opportunities although back then we used film. I have a box full of F1 photos to scan one day.

Last but not least I used to love to go to Hobart every December to see the yachts that had competed in the Sydney Hobart yacht race.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband, David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on WordPress.com with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. Currently we have five pets between us. Naomi's two dogs Toby and Teddy and cats, Tigerwoods and Panther and my cat Polly. My dog Cindy passed away aged 16 in April 2022.

  1. Great choices, we’re getting a wide range of sports today, and yours are very personal. Looks like Brad Hogg has just given you a BIG smile so ….. what happened next? 😂😂👏👏
