Boiled Cabbage Smells Bad
When I was a child there was an advertisement on TV, probably for air freshener. Mum is cooking dinner and dad comes home. “Are you cooking cabbage?” , “Yes, how did you know?” “The whole street knows!”
Well, that was a bit rude but it was the sixties and it was meant to be funny. Anyway, my point is boiling cabbage was what we used to do and boiled cabbage stinks. I know this for a fact because that’s how mum cooked it.
I don’t think I was a very fussy eater but I hated that boiled cabbage, white, soggy and with a nasty taste. Mum had to coax me to eat it.
Many years later as an adult, I discovered coleslaw. I love coleslaw. Raw cabbage was fine to eat, actually I prefer it to lettuce especially these curly Savoy cabbages. I have made coleslaw at home although I find the chopping and shredding tedious. I also learned that you can cook cabbage without turning it into a soggy mess but to this day I rarely eat it cooked.
Yes, never boil cabbage. It stinks and it takes all the nutrients out too. As a chef I learned steamed or stir fry is the best. Great post!

Visiting a friend one day for lunch, I watched her throw chunky-chopped cabbage and carrots into her blender, add water to cover, and process it on GRATE or CHOP. Then into the colander for a good drain-out and the job is done. Wow — perfectly grated! From then on I’ve made cole slaw using her quick and easy way.

I recently acquired access to a food processor so home made coleslaw is probably going to be on the menu more often in future.

Haha, I like boiled cabbage. Pretty common in Germany. Never thought it would stink… it just makes me the more hungry if I smell it 😀
