And This Is Why We Don’t Call It A Christmas Cactus.

When I moved I .was sad to leave my houseplants behind. There was just no room to fit them in the car so I left them with a friend. However, I inherited a plant that was left here by the previous occupiers of the house.

I naturally looked it up to see what it was as I’m not that familiar with succulents and found it was called a Zygocactus. I also learned that this plant is also known as a Christmas Cactus. A couple of my blogging friends have these and they flower in December. Mine didn’t of course, but it looked healthy enough so I sat it on a sunny shelf, watered it regularly but not too much and waited.

The Zygocactus bloomed

Yesterday I noticed that it had bloomed for the first time. In Australia they bloom in June , which is winter for us of course. And that I guess is why we never call them Christmas Cactus.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband, David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on WordPress.com with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. Currently we have five pets between us. Naomi's two dogs Toby and Teddy and cats, Tigerwoods and Panther and my cat Polly. My dog Cindy passed away aged 16 in April 2022.

      • I am one of those bad gardeners. I have a real tough palm plant in my living room and I sometimes forget it for a few months. It’s between a curtain and the windows. When I discover this plant again, I have pity for the plant and how it looks like. But all I need to do is pull off bad leaves, and give it water again. I usually give it like 2 or 3 liters waters and it is soaking it up in no time. I give it that much, because I know I will forget it again for a month or two lol. But it’s always surviving and it seems like I picked the right plant lol.

By the way, my cat is always reminding me of the plant again. Because once in a while she wants to play between the curtain and windows (I am not sure how it’s called, but it’s like some kind of apartment conservatory or a small windowed porch where the windows go to the ground and you can stand there). If the cat wouldn’t be, the plant would probably die lol.
