Paperless Society?
When computers first arrived on our desks we were told that we would become a paperless society. Thirty or so years later there is still a lot of paper in our lives even if we don’t write many letters, read newspapers or send cards. Here’s a sample from my letterbox this week.
I don’t send or receive as many Christmas and Birthday cards as I used to but getting an e-card is just not the same as a card that has been chosen or made just for you and you can’t hang an e-greeting above the mantel at Christmas.
I enjoy scrapbooking as a hobby, a nice way to embellish my favourite photos and keep them to look at from time to time.
Naomi and I love paper dolls and collect both vintage and reproductions of vintage paper doll books. This is a reproduction of a set I owned as a child.
Even though many of my books are packed away in boxes I still have a lot on shelves including these.
Finally, did you know it’s only 102 days to Christmas? Here’s some wrap that was leftover from last year.

I have a ridiculous number of books and I’ve already given away a ridiculous number of books. We also get ONLY two magazines — The New Yorker and National Geographics. We get The Washington Post online only. But we STILL have a house full of paper. Garry is a very good card picker. He will take a whole afternoon to pick THE perfect card.

I have packed a lot, mostly fiction and I will probably have to get rid of more but people just don’t want books so it’s hard to donate them and I can’t bring myself to just throw them out. I get Choice, which is a consumer magazine and I get some hard copy catalogues which I will probably cancel when I move. Sadly I can’t cancel the bills.

I have kept cards the children and others gave us but no longer send cards! I’m a total digigran😁 Books on the other hand! I have reduced by collection of thousands to a few hundred but am still tempted to buy more! I usually resist but yesterday I just had to have one on Mountain Zebra Park where we are camping at present🤷🏻♀️😲😁
I doubt we will ever be a paperless society

I sometimes feel like computers have just generated more paper. I still like things like recipes on paper because I don’t want a device next to me when I am cooking.

There is a lot of paper around my house too. As well has having a lot of the same stuff as Vanda does I have my postcard collection and many vintage paper items I saved. There are old mags, movie books, album covers since I have a huge collection of records, all my papers and bits of card for artwork, scraps of paper I write down stuff on and A4 paper for my printer if I need it. We are hardly a paperless society. One only has to visit the hospital I work in to see that. As much as we have tried to go green we can’t. Our recycle bins are always full and there are several of those. We use paper like gowns and there are paper like sheets used in some areas like treatment rooms. Admin still has piles of paperwork although so much is done on the computer now. Other products I see regularly are paper cups for drinking water and coffee, tissues, printed menus, newsletters, signs and decorations. There are many more but can’t think of them right now. I know there is always paper being shredded for security reasons. We shouldn’t forget about wood either or any other product that can be reused. If we keep making and buying new stuff the recycled stuff just piles up and doesn’t get used. I think companies should be more responsible and make more stuff out of recycled materials. Before this becomes a rant I will sign off.
