Bring on the Night
I am not often out with my camera after dark so I went into my archives to see what I had.
I used to enjoy going to cricket matches at Bellerive Oval . We had some pleasant summer evenings and some that were not quite so pleasant. I remember a New Year’s Day game where I wore a coat and gloves and remember that January is summer in Australia. This photo was on one of the good ones though.

One winter our town held a “Flush Away Winter” festival to raise funds for a new toilet block. It was a rare occasion for me to be in Geeveston after dark although actually it was probably only about 6pm.

An autumn evening in Hobart as I waited for the bus back to Geeveston, once again the time would be around 6pm.

At Garden’s by the Bay in Singapore in 2018. The sound and light show was fabulous.

We used to be out at night often when we went to concerts in Boston. That was a double whammy. Great pictures AND great music. Now, we get out a couple of night around Christmas because the days are short and its easy some night shots. But I miss Boston at night.

I’d love to go more often but a bus service that doesn’t run after 7pm and my poor night vision makes evening outings difficult unless someone takes me and when I to out to do photography I prefer to go alone unless I’m going with someone who is doing the same.

The first one reminds me of my childhood, when I was still in a soccer club. When we had training in the evening, they always had the floodlights on. And I liked this type of light. When I go running today, and depending which way I choose, there is sometimes a soccer field on my way where they do training in the evening with floodlights… sport property just looks gorgeous with floodlights on.

Usually when I went to cricket matches I would mostlyl take pictures of the players but every now and then I would get a shot of the grandstands because I liked the light in the evening and the ground has Mount Wellington in the background.

I did that too back then, for example in the HSV (Hamburg) stadium… I think I shot these photos with a point and shoot. I’ve seen the photos in my library… too sad that I didn’t know about framing a screne right back then. It was just randomly pointed at the crowd. Well, at least I documented history 😀 Bayern München won against Hamburg that particular day… I know it was 3:0 because I even have a photo of the large score display 😀 It was kinda cool to see FC Bayern München live in action, ripping Hamburg apart 😀
Lighning of floodlights is definitely beautiful. The day I mentioned, the hole of the stadium was covered with super dark clouds, and it started to rain heavily… players got wet, we spectators not. But both, the bad weather plus the floodlights… it just looked so good from a photographers standpoint. I find evenings better in the case of sport matches.

I agree. During the day the lighting can be very flat.
