Share Your World 2017 – Week #37

Sharing My World This Week

Complete this sentence: I want to learn more about …sewing and adapting patterns.

I’d love to become a better doll dressmaker especially for the poor old Ken dolls as Mattel only ever seems to dress them as bridegrooms or beach bums.

Ken never gets anything nice to wear.

On a vacation what you would require in any place that you sleep?

In a hotel room:

  • Number one, it must be clean and have a comfortable bed.
  • It must have some form of climate control especially in summer.
  • A shower I can get into. We stayed in a hotel in Sydney that had a wall that I could not step over with confidence so I could not take a shower while we stayed there.
  • Facilities to make tea or coffee
  • A small fridge

The other things I look for in accommodation are comfortable chairs, a desk or table, a pleasant location, access to public transport in a city and friendly staff.

 What is your greatest extravagance?

The dolls without a doubt. Vintage dolls like Shirley Temple or the hard plastic walkers that I love don’t come cheaply. I spend more on fashion dolls than I probably should because I am particular about faces in particular. It’s hard to explain to a non-doll person why the Barbies you can buy cheap in chain stores are unappealing to me now. It’s probably because I’m not three. I probably spend more on clothing for “the girls” than I do on my own. But then they look better in it.

My African American Barbies pose for a group shot.

What inspired you this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I always have trouble answering this question because it’s not something I think about all the time. Inspiration is not really the same as motivation. I was motivated to paint my house because it needed to be done. I wasn’t inspired because I wasn’t painting it in the colours that pleased me but the neutral colours that will be more attractive to potential buyers when I sell the house eventually.

What inspires me in life is more often than not something in nature, flowers or a beautiful view.

Spring is officially here.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. My current housemates are Cindy, my 14-year-old Staffy-Lab X dog and Polly the world's most unsociable cat who is seven.
