Compose Yourself Week #7
I am still not getting out to do a lot of photography but I wanted to take part in this week’s challenge so I’ve resorted to the archives again.
I am not much better at vertical lines than horizontal. I suspect that if I ever visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa I would probably accidentally straighten it when editing. I have tried to use uncropped photos where possible for this. I like to photograph buildings and have been photographing buildings around Hobart for a few years now so I have quite a few. The ones I picked I had purposely taken both a vertical and horizontal shot.
The first one is one of my favourite buildings in the CBD and the horizontal photo was to show it in all its green glory, the second one was to concentrate more on the embellishments and to be able to read the name of the building better. I am always afraid these old buildings will be demolished one day and I won’t remember them properly if I don’t record them.
The following two I took the other week when I went to Open House Hobart. I was too early as usual and stopped to take a couple of photos of the old Kodak building as it had been recently repainted. Can you tell that I like colourful buildings?
The remaining photos were taken down at the Hobart waterfront during the few days that the Sydney Hobart race yachts are there. I try to see the yachts every year but these are older photos. The first one of the yachts at their moorings at Constitution Dock I liked because of all the vertical lines of the masts and also of the path. The next two are of multiple race winner Wild Oats XI. They are two of my unceasing attempts to get a good photo of a maxi yacht. These yachts are so incredibly tall it’s quite a task. Perhaps these might have worked better if I had taken them from even further away to fit in all of the mast and then cropped out all the pontoons as that is probably too many horizontal lines. I do like the red sail cover against the grey of a rainy Hobart day though. The last one is a more recent attempt at getting a good photo of Wild Oats XI and this one has been cropped.

You have some marvelous strong vertical lines. I don’t know why you say you can’t do them. Excellent 😀

I don’t have a lot of confidence in my own perceptions I guess although I am much worse with horizontal.
