Share Your World – 2015 – Week #38

Sharing My World This Week

What do you do to make a living or during the day if you are retired. If you are a student what are you studying?
For most of my working life I was a cleaner. For several years I worked for the city rail system in my former home town of Adelaide. When the cleaning was outsourced to private companies I decided to leave and after that I worked in hospitality cleaning at apartment hotels. I did that in Adelaide for a few years and found similar work in Hobart. When I started to have back troubles I gave it up and studied Business Administration and did volunteer work at our local radio station and later at a church near our home.
Now that Hubby is unwell my main job will be taking care of him. At the moment on days when I’m not hopping on the bus to Hobart to visit him I do housework, exercise Cindy, read and write blog posts on the computer and spend some time on my hobbies.

Have you ever participated in a distance walking, swimming, running, or biking event? Tell your story.
No, I’ve never done any of those things. I have never enjoyed playing sports, preferring to get my exercise through my daily life. Cleaning kept me active. I’ve gained weight since I stopped doing it for a living. I really don’t like participating in group events that involve getting hot and sweaty. I prefer taking long walks with a dog or a camera.

What is usually your first thought when you wake up?
What time is it? What day is it? What do I need to do today? And during the winter “It’s too cold to get out of bed yet.”

Complete this sentence: Look out behind you, it’s a …
police car. Hubby doesn’t speed and always made sure that the car is in good condition but doesn’t everyone get nervous when they see a patrol car in the rear view mirror?

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
Hubby has had a setback recently and had to have some surgery so I wasn’t feeling particularly grateful or looking forward to anything last week. This week, thankfully he’s feeling a bit better and is in a ward with really nice nurses looking after him.
I’m not looking forward to anything specifically this week, just trying to make the best of things and stay positive.

I was born in England in 1957 and lived there until our family came to Australia in 1966. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where I met and married my husband, David. We came together over a mutual love of trains. Both of us worked for the railways for many years, his job was with Australian National Railways, while I spent 12 years working for the STA, later TransAdelaide the Adelaide city transit system. After leaving that job I worked in hospitality until 2008. We moved to Tasmania in 2002 to live in the beautiful Huon Valley. In 2015 David became ill and passed away in October of that year. I currently co-write two blogs on WordPress.com with my sister Naomi. Our doll blog "Dolls, Dolls, Dolls", and "Our Other Blog" which is about everything else but with a focus on photographs and places in Tasmania. In November 2019 I began a new life in the house that Naomi and I intend to make our retirement home at Sisters Beach in Tasmania's northwest. Currently we have five pets between us. Naomi's two dogs Toby and Teddy and cats, Tigerwoods and Panther and my cat Polly. My dog Cindy passed away aged 16 in April 2022.

  1. I’m sorry you guys had such a rough week last week. Glad this week is a little calmer for you both. Just take care of yourself. Caretakers have the worst time trying to stay balanced themselves. I know when I was really ill and in the hospital I felt worse for Chris than I did myself.
